The action takes place in any metropolitan city - a New York, Chicago, Washington DC, or Atlanta. The setting is a place where one can get lost in the city; somewhere they could never be found.

Synopsis

Thirteen-year-old Aleah’s future was filled with promise as a singer/songwriter. Within a year of her videos going viral, however, her mother sold Aleah’s body to a male fan, forcing Aleah to flee her home and live on the streets. Now, seven years later, Aleah is a victim of  human slavery, where she is forced to do the bidding of Duke, the head of the drug and human trafficking ring. Believing she will be set free on her twenty-first birthday, Aleah fights her way through the horror of her life only to discover it’s all a farce. She will never be free. Freedom only lies in her own death.

When desire meets opportunity, Aleah fakes her death and discovers sanctuary in a small, run-down Catholic Church – St. Michael’s. There, she meets a cognitively disabled young man known to everyone as “The Preacher.” While Father Liam battles with the aristocracy of the parish, he cannot bear the increasing homeless population. Defying the leaders of the church, Father Liam opens the doors to them. Even though Aleah believes she is free, there is a fatal flaw in her plan. One of Duke’s girls knows she is alive. Capture is just a breath away.

Set against the backdrop of urban America, this soft-pop/rock musical tackles relevant themes of teen homelessness and trafficking, the staggering statistics of which are seldom reported but growing each year. Featuring a powerhouse cast for the staged reading, Runaway Home is a call to combat the needless death and destruction of our nation’s most vulnerable, and offers sanctuary to anyone who feels trapped, outcast, and alone.
